I keep my John Bradshaw book "The Family" with me because I think he is the only person who understands me. I'm 50 years old and have been in and out of hospitals, group homes, 12 step programs and therapy since I was 14. I'm feeling hopeless living in Rochester, N.Y.

My mother was a member of Al-anon and was very psychologically abusive (and used the program to do it) I moved to Rochester from NYC 20 years ago. I have no friends anymore I think it's because Rochester is so "family" oriented. Feeling hopeless.
